The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a premier professional Twenty20 (T20) cricket league in India, initiated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2008. Held annually between March and May, it has rapidly grown into the most popular and richest cricket league in the world, with a 2023 media rights valuation of US$6.4 billion. The tournament consists of ten city-based franchise teams that compete in a high-intensity, double round-robin format, featuring top domestic and international players. The IPL has redefined cricket as a commercial entertainment spectacle, known for its glamorous, high-energy environment, which combines cricket with Bollywood, city-based loyalty, and a massive, global viewership. Teams like Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are recognized as the most successful, both having secured five titles, while the tournament operates on a thrilling player auction model, unique among cricket leagues, allowing for massive brand development.
Over its 18+ seasons, the IPL has become a pivotal platform for emerging talent, enabling young players to showcase their skills alongside seasoned veterans, often acting as a springboard for national team selection. It has profoundly changed the financial landscape of cricket, significantly improving players' financial prospects through lucrative contracts and high-stakes bidding. Despite facing challenges and controversies over the years, including betting scandals and team suspensions in 2013, the league has maintained its stature through rigorous management and immense commercial investment, contributing significantly to India's sports economy. The IPL’s success has led to its expansion, including the introduction of a Women’s Premier League (WPL) in 2023, and it continues to evolve its format to maintain its dominance in global entertainment.
